    Tango term

The tango term "enrosque" means corkscrew. It is a circular sweeping action in the dance.

    Uncle Corkscrew

When I happed upon Bryan Rawson's homepage, I found reference to his wife Connie's brother being referred to as Uncle Corkscrews. When I emailed and asked him shy, he replied "Cory Miller gained the nickname 'Uncle Corkscrew' in late 1994 when he was visiting us in Seattle. My oldest son Keith, who was 3 at the time, was badgering Cory for a tool to use when Cory was making minor repairs to his vehicle. Cory shared the corkscrew tool of his Swiss Army knife with Keith and the two worked side-by-side all afternoon. Because of this Keith named Cory 'Uncle Corkscrew,' an unofficial name which stuck."

National Audubon Society's Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary

Corkscrew Swamp contains the world's largest remaining old-growth Bald Cypress forest . A two-mile Boardwalk Trail winds through a primeval cathedral of towering 500 year old trees where a visitor can see the sights and landscapes of a Florida from long ago. See photos of a Harley racing through a corkscrew course.

The Laguna raceway in California has a corkscrew on the track. A comment (by unknown): "The Corkscrew is a fun part that is important to be fast in because it can help your time alot and because if you're not fast there, the AI guys might rearend you.. When you have a full tank, you will tend to slide on the exit if you get a little gas happy (too much throttle too soon)."

    Corkscrew Plants

The February 16, 1996 Detroit News Homestyle section tells us about a garden "There's a heart-shaped ficus, a basket-shaped ficus, a French-braid ficus (right), a corkscrew ficus and a ficus happily growing around a rock. Teasing a temperamental ficus tree into a shape was a challenge, although not as difficult as you might think

    More Plants

Corkscrew valliseneria - an acquatic plant. Tom Hardman (email: mercury@mindspring.com) says:

My new 55 gallon aquarium simply won't be complete without a couple of nice little patches of corkscrew valliseneria. I've searched all the local Atlanta fish stores. Can you help?

and a further comment (author unknown): valliseneria - the regular or corkscrew varieties--is reputed to do well, but i've never had luck with it under any conditions. I think my gravel was too course for it.

And lastly.............the corkscrew willow, Salix matsudana 'Contorta'. Branches are often used for flower arrangements, both dried and fresh. I once saw a bunch of fresh 8' high branches rooting like crazy in a bucket of water in a florist shop.

    Corkscrews in the Classics

Lewis Carroll mentions the Corkscrew in Through the Looking Glass - Chapter 2 - The Garden of Live Flowers:

`I should see the garden far better,' said Alice to herself, `if I could get to the top of that hill: and here's a path that leads straight to it -- at least, no, it doesn't do that -- ' (after going a few yards along the path, and turning several sharp corners), `but I suppose it will at last. But how curiously it twists! It's more like a corkscrew than a path! Well, this turn goes to the hill, I suppose -- no, it doesn't! This goes straight back to the house! Well then, I'll try it the........'

    Corkscrew Roller Coasters

    CEDAR POINT, OHIO

    THE CORKSCREW (1976)

Built during the nation's Bicentennial, this red, white and blue scream machine was the first-of-its-kind when it debuted. The Corkscrew flips riders upside down directly over the midway, where spectators can get dizzy by just watching!

    VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA

    THE CORKSCREW AT PLAYLAND

Landmarks The Coaster at Playland is a bit of a relic. The wooden structure looks dowdy compared to its sexy new neighbour, The Corkscrew. But despite a steel coaster building frenzy in the 1980s, wooden coasters are back in vogue. What is it about the shake, rattle and roll of a traditional coaster that's so appealing? And can we justify the ecological cost of a thrill?

Twist and turn on the crowd-pleasing Corkscrew, featuring a DNA scrambling double helix and a knock off your socks 75 foot drop!

    GEUGA LAKE, AURORA, OHIO

    THE CORKSCREW

Someone roller-coaster on the goings-on for Geauga Lake for 1996. He said that, first of all, the park is holding a Halloween event this year; second, that the Corkscrew is being dismantled to be replaced with a standard Vekoma Boomerang. If true, this leads me to wonder where the Corkscrew will end up, and I can think of another Premier-owned ex-Funtime park in Central Ohio which desperately needs a ride like the Corkscrew.

    ROCKY POINT, RHODE ISLAND

Rocky Point is the second-oldest continually-operating park in the U.S. The park's steel coaster, Corkscrew Loop, was built in 1984.

    IDAHO

Silverwood moved the Corkscrew from Knotts Berry Farm. It was the first contemporary coaster to turn riders upside down. Silverwood is building a new wooden coaster scheduled to open in 1996.

    SHAKOPEE, MINNESOTA

    VALLEYFAIR

The Corkscrew climbs to a height of 85 feet, drops into a 360-degree vertical loop, follows 2 giant "coil-like" spirals and ends with a 360-degree horizontal loop. The coaster reaches speeds of 50 miles per hour. Rails, a steel coaster, features individual cars that travel up to 50 miles per hour around a figure-8 style track.

    Corkscrews in Song

In Steve Howe's album Turbulence you'll find:

    Turbulence

    Hint Hint

    Running the Human Race

    The Inner Battle

    Little Star

    Between Right and Wrong

    Heat City

    Corkscrew Hill

    Nero and the Trend

    Time Runs Slow

You'll also find Corkscrew Hill on the albrum Chatterbox by Irish singer Máirtín O'Connor.

...and a song by Bob Dylan: You're a Big Girl Now

Our conversation was short and sweet

Nearly knocked me off of my feet

And I'm back in the rain, oh,

and you are on dry land, oh,

    You made it there somehow

    You're a big girl now.

    Bird on the horizon

    Sittin' on a fence

He's singing his song for me

    At his own expense

And I'm just like that bird

    Singin' just for you

I hope that you can hear

Hear me singin' through these tears

    Love is so simple

    To quote a phrase

You've known it all the time

    I'm learnin' it these days

Oh, I know where I can find you

    In somebody's room

    It's a price I have to pay

You're a big girl all the way

    Time is a jet plane

    It moves too fast

    Oh but what a shame

That all we've shared can't last

    I can change I swear

    See what you can do

    I can make it through

    You can make it too

    A change in the weather

    Is known to be extreme

But what's the sense in changing

    Horses in midstream

I'm going out of my mind

With a pain that stops and starts

Like a corkscrew to my heart

    Ever since we've been apart

In the Fall of 1994- The Black Crowes performed at small private gigs under the pseudonyms "Blessed Chloroform" , "The Corkscrews of Renown", and "O.D. Jubilee Band" in the U.S. and Europe.

    Corkscrew Trails

Grand Canyon National Park's Bright Angel Trail is one of the two superhighways of the Grand Canyon, the other being the South Kaibab Trail. Both trails are well maintained and offer some spectacular views of the Canyon. The Bright Angel Trail was originally an Indian trail used by the Havasupai Indians to commute between the rim and Indian Gardens. Along the trail you will encounter the Devil's Corkscrew where an abrupt decsent thru the Vishnu Schist begins. Here in the summer time as the temperature can easily reach 130 degrees.

    Corkscrews - The Book

The complete works of "Corkscrews" by Mel Reichler and Jim Egan. A welcome book that will greet you everday with a random corkscrew. A lot of laughs and hopefully some insight.

Here are some excerpts from the "book":

When Sister Greb asks Reb Dunzel "What is a corkscrew?," he replies "A Corkscrew is a sentence....It's a sentence that bends and twists with a handle on one end and a point on the other."

"A Corkscrew is like a story. For a story to work right it's got to have some bends and twists in the plot, a story line to hold on to, and some semblance of a point at the end. But a poem can be a Corkscrew or a song. Even just a couple of words arranged properly can be a Corkscrew."

"The beauty of a good Corkscrew is that it opens ideas up but it doesn't pour the contents all over you. It lets you peek inside and smell what's there and if you want to, you can try to pour out it's meaning or put the cork back or just leave it uncorked."

"A Corkscrew shows you an idea then it shows you the pattern of the idea and then it shows you the pattern itself without the idea."

"Corkscrews are always crazy but true - they touch upon ideas that are strange but when you think about them, not so strange after all."

"Like good sex, a Corkscrew is its own context."

"There are Corkscrews for which there is no cork."

"Corkscrews are the sex of the mind."

"Corkscrews are lost point down and found point up."

"A Corkscrew is the common ground between any truth and its contradiction."

"A Corkscrew is a one person dialogue or a two person monologue."

"The problem is that the meaning of a Corkscrew is always another Corkscrew."

"The meaning of a Corkscrew is always another Corkscrew."

Thanks to Mel Reichler and Jim Egan for teaching us the meaning of Corkscrew. I enjoy reading these corkscrews - a few at a time - over breakfast to get my day going. Want more? Contact Mel Reichler
